Today’s military air crews are some of the best trained aviation professionals in the world. They are adept at processing multiple sources of disparate information, and rely on the latest technologies and systems to help them navigate their tactical environment.
To help streamline the display of complex tactical information for today’s air crews, ENSCO, Inc., developed the Tactical Synthetic Vision System (TSVS) to dramatically reduce operator workload, enhance situational awareness and improve tactical decision making.
TSVS processes information from multiple sources and synthesizes it into a single 3-D image, allowing the air crew to observe tactical information in a format that is easily interpreted and intuitive to use. TSVS produces a computer-generated image of the external scene topography that is derived from aircraft attitude, a high-precision navigation solution, terrain, and bathymetry databases, thus identifying obstacles and relevant cultural features and information that may impact tactical decision making. This includes information such as the position of air, ground, surface and subsurface platforms and their projected paths, communications link presentations and projected paths of deployed weapons. This allows the user to view not only the current tactical situation, but also how it will change in the near future.
Users can change their perspective to analyze the environment from different vantage points, i.e., inside the aircraft from the pilot’s view or outside the aircraft, including viewing the scene from above or below the ocean surface. TSVS allows operators to change the viewing angle, in both azimuth and elevation, and to pan, zoom or rotate their eyepoint to maximize situational awareness of a given environment. This allows users to view information that may be obscured from a single viewpoint.
TSVS uses databases to create a visual picture similar to what the flight crew would see out the window in good weather during daylight. This essentially allows a flight crew to see through atmospheric obscurations, such as haze, clouds, fog, rain, snow, dust or smoke.
TSVS provides pilots with a clear 3-D image of the environment, such as no-fly zones, controlled and special use airspace and threat envelopes, thus ensuring the safety of the aircraft and the crew. This allows pilots to observe the limits of controlled and special use airspace and threat envelopes without guessing their extent.
There are times when the 2-D display is superior to the 3-D display – for example, when trying to view a large area to get an overview of the tactical situation. TSVS retains the 2-D display that is comparable to existing tactical displays and uses traditional tactical symbology. Users can switch between the 2-D and 3-D modes with a single key. The 2-D mode implements unrestricted pan and zoom capabilities, making it superior to existing 2-D zoom in/out functions that only halve or double the display. This capability to move easily between views gives users greater flexibility in the presentation of tactical information.
The traditional approach to antisubmarine and anti-mine warfare has been uniform deployment of sonobuoys. However, factors such as ocean temperature and water depth have a significant impact on a given buoy’s coverage envelope and propagation path. TSVS takes these variables into account and visually displays coverage volume, allowing users to visualize sensor coverage, including gaps in the sensor net.
TSVS is the first tactical display to provide the real-time display of urban feature data to the user. This provides enhanced situational awareness by allowing users to highlight buildings or other structures to make them easier to identify during periods of high workload.
TSVS is the first display to integrate the information generated by acoustic environmental models to display a 3-D image of the acoustic environment in real-time to the air crew. It utilizes 3-D models instead of tactical symbology to portray air, surface and subsurface entities. The basic software architecture provides for addition of new capabilities and re-hosting on new or existing platforms.
